Activities: Independent private institution founded by a group of Arctic explorers to promote study and disseminate information concerning the Arctic, especially Greenland. Expedition archives were deposited here, an Arctic library established, and a large photographic collection comprising ca. 60,000 photographs of Greenland dating back to ca. 1850. Since 1993, it has been co-located with the Danish Polar Centre (Danish Ministry of Research). Photographs are available through polarphotos@dpc.dk .

Year of foundation: 1995 [formed by the amalgamation of the Geogical Survey of Denmark (founded 1888) and the Geological Survey of Greenland (founded 1946)]
Activities: The fundamental mission of DGGU's Greenland Geoscience Unit is to establish the broad geological basis for the exploration and development of Greenland's mineral resources embracing minerals, petroleum, gas, coal and hydropower. Carries out geological, geophysical, geochemical and glaciological studies under the authority of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The GREENMIN (Greenland Mineralisation Data Bank) holds data on all known economic mineral localities. DGGU also holds comprehensive data archives for seismic studies, well logs and a core archive. The Greenland Bibliography Database contains over 8000 references to the geosciences in Greenland. Library.

Activities: The national centre for meteorological information and data. Since 1986 has maintained a relational database updated every three hours with data from more than 40 stations in Greenland. Ice charts for Greenland waters are issued regularly for navigational safety. Research is carried out within the fields of meteorology, climatology, oceanography, physics of the middle atmosphere, geomagnetism, and solar-terrestrial physics.
