Antarctic Winter Stations 2002

During the 2002 austral winter 42 stations were open in Antarctic regions recording meteorological data and involved in other scientific research. These were operated by 17 countries. In the list the symbol _ indicates the station is on one of the 19 peri-Antarctic islands (17 stations), and * that it is in the region covered by the Antarctic Treaty (34 stations - 10 also marked _). The number in brackets indicates the position clockwise from the prime meridian. Some stations are in ice shelves which move, thus their geographical coordinates are somewhat variable; these are marked with the sign¸.
