In 1992, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade took over responsibility for Antarctic affairs from the disbanded Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Seeks to maintain a New Zealand presence in the Ross Dependency; to support and participate in the Antarctic Treaty System; to protect the Antarctic environment and oversee the implementation of the Antarctic (Environmental Protection) Act; and to influence developments in an area which due to its proximity is of national importance to New Zealand. |

One of seven New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) formed in 1992, NIWA provides a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources.
Spread throughout New Zealand, NIWA has its corporate headquarters in Auckland with the main Antarctic research based at the Christchurch campus, and the library based at the Wellington campus. NIWA scientists have worked for many years on Antarctic atmospheric processes and aquatic ecosystems. A NIWA research vessel, RV Tangaroa, also supplies logistical support for scientific studies and hydrographic surveys in the Southern Ocean.
NIWA staff participate widely in international initiatives, representing New Zealand in such fora as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). |

Originally formed to encourage the New Zealand Government to initiate a national Antarctic programme and to establish a permanent base. These goals were achieved in 1957/58. Now acts as a forum bringing together all those interested in Antarctica and fostering public knowledge of the continent. In addition to the National Office and Polar Information Centre in Christchurch, there are four branches in New Zealand, based in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago, and an Overseas branch to administer the overseas membership. |
