Specialized research library within the National Library of New Zealand. Legal deposit library with comprehensive holdings of all books published in New Zealand about Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in addition to many titles published in other countries. Extensive manuscript collections include papers, journals and diaries from the two Scott (1901-04, 1910-13), three Shackleton (1907-09, 1914-17, 1921-22) and Australasian Antarctic (1911-14) expeditions.

Independent, non-profit organization under the auspices of the Royal Society of New Zealand. ICAIR's mission is to collect, co-ordinate, analyze, and disseminate scientific, environmental and educational information on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. ICAIR has expertise in the fields of Antarctic environmental management, information management and digital technologies, geographical information systems, remote sensing and the INTERNET.

Established in 1963. Initially, emphasis was placed on building an historical collection; this has now expanded to include scientific and technical material. A small library at Scott Base is also under the librarian's control.

DESCRIPTION OF POLAR COLLECTION: The Antarctic - all aspects, e.g. history, geology, biology, etc. together with relevant scientific and technical material. A small portion of the collection is Arctic material. English is the preferred language, but material is received in Russian, French and Spanish.
