The FMI Library was founded in 1841. It was the library for the magnetic-meteorological observatory of the University of Helsinki. In 1918, the institution became a governmental board named Valtion meteorologinen keskuslaitos. From 1967 the frame organization has been Ilmatieteen laitos - Finnish Meteorological Institute.

We do not have a separate polar collection. Our material is arranged by countries. So all we can say about our polar collection is that we have some material in this area. We have literature and other material on northern areas (especially meteorological and climatological material). We also have some reports on polar expeditions and magnetic data on northern areas. Our library specializes in meteorology, geomagnetism, and geoelectricity and air pollution research. Our Institute publishes six yearbooks which also contain data on northern areas.
