Dr John Arnfield Heap CMG [1932-2006]

It is with great sadness that the Scott Polar Research Institute announces the death of John Heap, Director of SPRI from 1992 to 1997, at the age of 74. John died peacefully at home on Wednesday 8 March. Before coming to the Institute, John was with the Polar Regions Section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for many years, heading the section between 1975 and 1992. His early research, for which he was awarded his doctorate, was pioneering work on Antarctic sea ice. After his retirement, he continued to take a wide interest in polar matters as, for example, Chair of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and Treasurer of the International Glaciological Society.

The funeral service will be at Cambridge Crematorium on Friday 17 March at 11.15 am. (Family flowers only, please). There will be a Thanksgiving Service at Harston Parish Church at 3 pm on Saturday 6 May, with refreshments afterwards (donations to Water Aid or Mount Everest Foundation, c/o Cook Funeral Directors, 01954-260325).
