Improving interpretation and understanding

School group in the Museum

  • The Museum wants to reach as wide an audience as possible, from the youngest schoolchild upwards, and to give them all a fulfilling, worthwhile experience of our Polar Heritage and an understanding of the importance of the polar regions in the context of our changing climate.
  • Many of the themes and story lines have links directly into the current and proposed National Curriculum and the Museum will be actively seeking to increase the number and range of school groups.
  • Improving interpretation and understanding for all audiences will be achieved through a variety of strategies. Most important will be the displays and their interpretation, and here the Museum has developed a structured and clearly understandable framework of themes and narratives which will enable all visitors to learn about their polar heritage and polar science.
  • The displays are rich in objects and are supplemented by images from the photographic collection as well as audiovisual presentations.
  • The Museum will also provide an audio guide, large print caption guide and a range of informative leaflets.
  • We will also be offering a range of other activities for the general public, including seminars and lectures, gallery talks and family events.
