Transforming the Polar Museum

A new museum for Britain's polar heritage

Visualisation of main gallery

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Polar Museum at SPRI is close to completing its £1.75 million redevelopment. The galleries were opened on 8 June 2010 by TRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex. Our new design increases the existing gallery space by 20%, has opened up the Lensfield Road entrance, enables environmental control of items on display and creates new stores and conservation facilities for the museum and its archives. Working in partnership with Blue the design company ltd, the Institute's curatorial staff have put many more of the Museum's objects on view than were previously displayed and have developed new and exciting interpretation which incorporates many images from the Institute's photographic archives.
