| Full description: |
Whole: Showing a sorrowful woman wringing her hands. Her head and shoulders are covered by a drape or veil held in place by a dark band. Her bodice, with horizontal braiding, has wide shoulders with modest Marie style sleeves (gathered in at intervals) and the full skirt is tightly pleated into the low, pointed waist. She is wearing a double necklace.
The clothes somewhat resemble those of the 1830's or 1840's but they are not fashionable. She is possibly a literary or theatrical character, perhaps a "village maiden", dressed in what someome at that time thought such a character would wear. Or perhaps it is a British or American version of the dress of some other country. |
