Description: One of set of 49 watercolours, 1 pencil sketch, 7 pen drawings, all the work of Staff Surgeon Edward Lawton Moss, R.N. of H.M.S.Alert during the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76.

Note: Text, on reverse: 'Serving out the daily allowance of an ounce of lime juice. A quarter deck scene at 10.30 any morning during the commission (for particulars hold up to the light)'. Details written on reverse in areas corresponding to the material on the front of the watercolour: 'Carrier pigeons ... ice boat on skids ... The boats inverted on skids will be taken down and hung from their davits when we start from Disco for Melville Bay ... Booty hatch of quarter deck ... Lieutenant Parr ... Good, Chief Boatswains Mate ... Nelly, Captain Markhams Dog ... Symons, observe patent leather shoes and swell socks'.
