| Note: | Text, on reverse: 'Proven settlement from the East ... we stayed two days at Proven ... we called into Proven to pick up another Eskimo Hans - the Hans of kane and Hayes. In this settlement one hundred and fifteen out of a population of one twenty one Eskimo we found nearly all the men away hunting on the main land. It is said the hunters sometimes penetrate into the verny centre of the continent. Food of every sort has been scarce this year. The Danish relief Brig that will take our letters home and on which the people rely for most of their necessities has not yet returned. The little island on which Proven is built is rich in Arctic flora. The common yellow Arctic poppy grows everwhere'. |
