Description: One of set of 49 watercolours, 1 pencil sketch, 7 pen drawings, all the work of Staff Surgeon Edward Lawton Moss, R.N. of H.M.S.Alert during the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76.

Note: Text, on reverse: 'Alert, Winter Quarters, 82.27 N, December 1875. Daily Routines. Digging out ice from top of hummock to melt for cooking and washing. About 10 inches of top of this hummock gives ice perfectly free from salt and the substitution of ice for snow has effected a great saving of fuel. The Marines had this duty'. There is also a small sketch on the reverse that featured a clothed figure with 'seal skin' headgear and 'cloth boots with thick cork soles, strap and buckle'.
