Carving: Woman Hunter and child in grey soapstone flecked with green. Woman is standing with legs apart. Left arm is by her side; right arm is bent backward over her shoulder. Eyes and mouth are incised. Lines of dots (representing tattoos) radiate across her cheeks, chin and forehead. Knob at back of head. Woman is wearing a parka with straight cut thigh-length front apron and curved pointed back flap which extends to the knees. Single line is incised around cuffs; double parallel lines incised around edges of parka. Knee-length trousers are incised with a single line around the knees; two parallel horizontal and two curved lines are incised at each side. Head of a child, wearing a hood, projects from left side of woman's parka hood. Eyes, nose and circular mouth are incised. White label "8" in blue ink is glued to right side of trousers. Holes in feet suggest carving was attached to a base (now missing). Circular holes in hands suggest presence of other pieces (now missing). |
