Carving: Man and Kayak, soapstone and wood. Man in a kayak (a) carved in grey soapstone. Man, in man-hole at centre of kayak, has arms outstretched. Eyes, nostrils and mouth are incised on outlined flat face beneath upstanding pointed hood. Kayak is carved with sharp pointed prow, short stern and flat base. A wooden harpoon is glued to each side of deck at prow with heads at each side of figure; two wooden sticks are glued to each side at stern on each side of a seal float. Float is made from grey soapstone with wooden plug in circular hole at head end. White stone fish is glued to deck with head facing figure (probably recent addition). Double-bladed wooden paddle (b) is separate. White label "17" in blue ink on paddle and on base of kayak. Syllabics and E?-404 incised on base (partially covered with paper label). |
