a, b, and c: Polar Bear and Hunter, man (a) and bear (b) on base (c). Man (a) is carved in black soapstone standing slightly bent forward with feet apart and arms at his sides. Eyes, pupils, nose, nostils and upturned mouth are carved on oval face. He is wearing a thigh-length parka with upstanding pointed hood and knee-length trousers. Line is incised around ends of sleeves and straight bottom edge of parka and bottom of trouser legs. Holes in each hand. Ivory peg between legs corresponds to hole in wooden base. Bear (b) is carved from black soapstone. Claws are carved on outstretched front and back legs. Triangular ears are carved at each side of head; eyes and nostrils are incised. Mouth is open to reveal white ivory teeth and tongue painted red. Ivory peg (presenting harpoon) is inserted into hole in left side of neck surrounded by red paint. Wooden peg in right side of body corresponds to hole on wooden base (c) so that bear is positioned on its right side. White label "15" in blue ink glued to back of man's right leg, bear's right leg and underside of base. Label "16?" on side of base. a: Polar Bear and Hunter, man (a) and bear (b) on base (c).
