| Full description: |
Parka: Woman's, outer (a) and inner (b), hip-length. Body and sleeves of outer layer (a) are made from four main pieces of checked blue, red, green and yellow tartan cotton fabric. Front and back are made from one piece seamed vertically along each side. Separate piece of same, cut with rectangular extension at the centre front and at the back of the neck between the shoulders, is sewn around the neck. Edge of fabric around neck and bottom of sleeves is turned to the interior and machine stitched with white cotton thread. White cotton fabric overlaid with multi-coloured (orange, purple, green, black, red) fabric forms a 140 mm wide double-layered band around the straight bottom edge. Structural sewing is by machine using white and black cotton thread. White fabric label inside front bottom edge: "Cozens" in black ink. Inner layer (b) is made from striped (blue, purple, white, beige) flannel in same construction as outer layer. Upstanding collar and cuffs of commercially tanned dark brown haired seal skin are attached to neck and sleeves with black and beige thread in overcast stitch. Yoke is made from glass beads (opaque white, transparent green, transparent orange, transparent red, opaque black) in geometric design of repeated diamonds applied in netting technique with the beads threaded on double strand of white cotton thread. Beadwork is sewn to band of red cotton fabric under collar. 16 mm wide band of beadwork of alternating transparent green and transparent orange triangles separated by line of opaque black/dark blue beads and bordered with transparent clear beads threaded on white cotton thread is sewn around bottom edge of collar. Rectangular band (70 mm wide) in repeated geometric designs in opaque white, opaque black, transparent orange, transparent green, and transparent clear beads is added around upper edge of each cuff. Structural sewing is by hand and machine stitching using white and black cotton thread. |
