Carving: Of a Shaman (Angaqoq). Made of ivory in originally 2 (now 3) pieces. a - Human figure on parallelogram-shaped base. Figure is standing with feet apart, knees bent and right forearm raised. Fingers are incised on clenched hand with circular hole through centre. Chest, back, waist, bottom of trousers and boots are outlined. U-shaped knob at the neck is inserted into separate head (b). Head is carved with chin length hair, closed eyes, open mouth and triangular-shaped nose. Separate arm (c) was originally attached to figure. Fingers are incised on clenched hand with circular hole through centre. Paper label glued to base : "Angaqoq 109 From Greenland. Presented by Reginald Orcutt, Explorers Club, New York" |
