Antarctica Day

On Saturday 1 December 2012, museum visitors and staff celebrated the anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty by making Antarctic flags and writing our own 'Alternative' Antarctic Treaty. Some of the additional 'articles' added to the treaty are below and images of sme the flags will follow shortly.

The Polar Museum's 'Alternative' Antarctic Treaty

Article 1: All ice that calves from Antarctic glaciers should be matched by a suitable quantity of gin and tonic.

Article 2: Penguins should be able to go on foreign exchanges to the north pole.

Article 3: Anyone who has ever worked at Antarctica may claim Antarctic citizenship. Antarctic citizenship confers the right to free ice cubes, if consumed south of 60 degrees South.

Article 4: All icebergs must be made of CHOCOLATE.

Article 5: The natives of Antarctica (i.e. whales, seals, fish, algae)) have the strongest voice and vote in Antarctic law and policymaking.

Article 6: All penguins are allowed to adopt one human as its pet.

Article 7: Vanilla Ice's classic tune 'Ice, Ice Baby' will become the Antarctic anthem.
