10. Formal course regulations

The formal course regulations are as follows:

  1. The scheme of examination for the nine-month course of study in Polar Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
  2. Three essays, to be no longer than the limit prescribed by the Examiners, on subjects chosen by the candidate from a list of subjects announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Geography.
  3. A thesis, of not more than 20,000 words in length excluding footnotes, tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee, submitted at a date to be determined by them.
  4. Students have to attain an average mark of 60% in both components, although a marginal fail in one component may be compensated for by an exceptional performance in the other component.
  5. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on any of, or any combination of, the thesis, and the essays, and on the general field of knowledge in which they fall.
