Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Polar Studies

1. Introduction

The Master of Philosophy in Polar Studies is a one-year graduate degree which offers a unique opportunity to conduct independent research in one of the foremost Institutes for Polar Studies in the world.

The course offers specialist research and focused training in two areas; Social Sciences and Humanities, including the anthropology of northern peoples, and indigenous knowledge systems; and in Polar Physical Sciences, focusing on remote sensing of polar environments, the high-latitude marine geological record, glaciology and climate change, and for the first time, in polar biology. These latter projects will be delivered in conjunction with scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, also based in Cambridge.

The course can also offer the opportunity to work in the unique archives of the Institute.

The main focus of the course is in the production of a 20,000 word Thesis, supervised by Institute staff. Many students treat this as a springboard towards a Ph.D. degree.
