Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Polar Studies
4. Applications
Applications for entry in October 2013 are now open. Application forms should be obtained from the Board of Graduate Studies, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ, U.K.
Research topics for applications available to view here are examples of the types of research topics which students can follow. New topics may be added shortly.
The application form must be accompanied by:
- a statement of intended research (between 500 and 1000 words). This can be an indication of which proposed topic the student wishes to research, together with any of their own ideas they wish to bring to the topic, why they wish to research that topic, and their experience in that area. Where students have their own proposed research, this statement must include a clear and concise outline of the possible dissertation topic, the candidate's reasons for choosing the topic including relevant experience and expertise, the principal sources of information, fieldwork requirements (if appropriate), and research methods.
- the candidate's reasons for undertaking the course, any relevant previous experience, and an indication as to whether or not it is possible that the candidate will wish to continue to Ph.D. research.
- a sample of written work (between 3,000 and 5,000 words) demonstrating the candidate's capacity to prepare and write a critical scholarly argument, using customary scholarly apparatus (footnotes etc.) to a standard necessary to undertake a Master's level research degree. In the case of mature students hoping to return to university after some years away, a professional report on a subject related to the Polar Regions will also be accepted for consideration as part of the application.
No application will be considered unless it is accompanied by a statement and written work as outlined above, and it is in the candidates own interest to make sure that they are submitted with their application. Admission to Cambridge requires acceptance by a College in addition to acceptance by the University; applications are automatically considered by Colleges named by the applicant following the acceptance by the Institute.
Incomplete applications may be delayed. Please allow yourself plenty of time to prepare your application and supporting documents. It is the applying applicant's responsibility to send the supporting documents to the Board of Graduate Studies.
