SPRI Review 2000

SPRI Review 2000

Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute

Chairman: Philippa Foster Back

The Friends continued their support of the Institute and were able to donate more than £5000 during 2000 to further the work of the Library, the Picture Library, the Archives, and the Museum. In addition an amount of money was given to the Oral History Project, which has an important role to play in the heritage of polar exploration. It is hoped to continue support at this monetary level given a sustained level of membership, above 500 people, and the continuing success of Friends events. This year a new category of Life Membership was introduced, which many have taken up, but the Friends motto stands: 'Friends Please Find a Friend.'

The main Friends events are the lunch held in June at Girton and the buffet after the AGM held in November at the Institute. It is nice that so many are able to attend these get-togethers with numbers usually ranging between 70 and 80 - do come along if you are able to; you would be most welcome.

During the year the Friends Secretary, Anne Millar, resigned and our sincere thanks go to her for her contribution over the last three years. Ann Bean has been appointed the new Friends Secretary, and we welcome her to this role. Our continuing thanks go to Jennifer Dale, Membership Secretary, and to the regular band of helpers at evening and Friends events - Sally Stonehouse, Anne Todd, Dione Mills, and Tony Billinghurst.

The Committee would welcome suggestions from Members about events or merchandise for the shop or indeed any ways that you might think of to expand our membership base and so enhance the work that we do to support the Institute. We look forward to hearing from you.
