| Aberdeen University East Greenland Project | To produce detailed geological maps of northern Clavering Island, and to collect rock specimens. | £1200 |
| Arctic Wintering: Kap Tobin | To collect snow samples and undertake an Arctic wintering. | £500 |
| Queen's University Belfast, Øksfjordjokelen Expedition '97 | To collect data about structure, rheology and thermo-dynamics of Øksfjordjokelen, a remote plateau icefield in northern Norway. | £1500 |
| Trans-Spitsbergren Epedition | To ski unaided to the northernmost point of the island, returning by the same route. | £500 |
| Friends of the Innu, UK | To assess the feasibility of co-operative alternative development projects, proposed by the Innu of Labrador. | £500 |
